In a letter to Vice President Biden, City Attorney Trutanich endorsed re-authorizing the federal assault weapons ban and a new ban on large magazine clips. The City Attorney also offered to provide any assistance necessary to implement the proposals recently called for by President Obama in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
In addition to a call for a reauthorization of the federal assault weapons ban, the City Attorney also urged the closing of the gun show loophole, reinstatement of effective background checks and waiting periods, and the ensuring of greater resources to mental health and school safety.
The City Attorney has a long history of supporting firearm regulations, including a letter in 2011 to U.S. Representative Carolyn McCarthy affirming his strong support of an amendment to the Brady Handung Violence prevention act in order to prohibit large magazine clips of more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
