Huge Investments amid Ghastly Deficit

Sacramento, CA — Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement after the Governor signed into law key provisions of the new state budget:

“We are facing the worst public health crisis and budget deficit in modern history. Despite this, the Legislature buckled up and passed a budget that rejects cuts and instead invests in our marginalized communities,” said Assembly Member Miguel Santiago. “I’m proud to see that we’re leveraging local, state, and federal dollars to reach the $2 billion investment in homelessness we’ve been pushing for in AB 3300 while also pursuing strict accountability to reduce homelessness through a state mandate in AB 3269. Not only are we investing in combatting homelessness, but we are also uplifting our undocumented families by expanding their access to California Earned Income Tax Credit and healthcare. We are also prioritizing our students by funding after school programs, closing the digital divide, and maintaining two years of free community college – all which we’ve been tirelessly fighting for this year.”

Assembly Member Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Communications and Conveyance and the Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness. He also sits on the Assembly Committees on Public Safety, Health, Higher Education and Utilities and Energy. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
