JAMES A. MILLER, Captain Commanding Officer Van Nuys Area

We are struggling with our crime reduction for this year.  We are currently up 8% year to date.  This comes after four straight years of crime reductions.  This came about as a result of the good working relationship between the community and the police.  Without you calling and helping us solve crimes we could not accomplish the good job our officers do.  Our primary crime problems this year are robbery, Grand Theft Auto, and Burglary/Theft From Vehicle.  People leaving valuables in their cars are the biggest problem for us to overcome.  We need your help on this issue.

The Police Department is focusing its efforts on Gangs, Guns, and Drugs this year.  We have seen an increase in violent gang crime in the past few months, including three attempt murders of police officers.  We are focusing our attention on removing this violent segment of the community.

If you know anyone who is interested in becoming a Police Officer, now is the time to apply.  The LAPD needs officers and is hiring on a constant basis.  The job has a large number of benefits including good pay; health, dental and life insurance; generous vacations and sick leaves; but most importantly a sense of making a difference in the lives of people in the community.  Go to JOINLAPD.COM for more information on this truly rewarding career opportunity.

I invite everyone to get involved with the police in their neighborhood in a positive way.  I look forward to seeing you at anyone of our many upcoming events.  Remember we have two Basic Car Meeting a year and countless Neighborhood Watch Meetings for you to attend and find out what is going on.

We are specifically looking for community members to volunteer their time to assist in data input at Van Nuys Station.  If you are interested in helping make us more effective, contact Sergeant Whittemore at our Community Relations Office, at 818-374-9404.  Sergeant Whittemore will get you started to become a Specialist Reserve Officer.  Typing is the key skill needed for this unique position.
