How to Explore Fairbanks Without a Car
FAIRBANKS, ALASKA — Whether by shuttle, motorcycle, guided tour or by foot there are a wide variety of ways visitors can navigate the Fairbanks region. With a reduction in available rental cars this summer, we aim to articulate all the different ways visitors can cruise around town and to destinations nearby.
To that end, we have surveyed our partners and have compiled a current list of businesses that offer different types of rental vehicles, shuttles to and from the airport, train depot and local attractions as well as nearby destinations such as North Pole, Chena Hot Springs Resort, Denali National Park and Preserve, the Arctic Circle and more. Some businesses provide transportation only while others offer guided tours or multi-day tours.
Additional modes of transportation in Fairbanks include taxi cabs, Uber and Lyft, the MACS Transit bus system, Turo independent vehicle rentals and bicycles. Alaska Railroad offers trips to and from Denali National Park – or you can go all the way to Anchorage. Reaching out to rental car businesses is still recommended but, as with many parts of the country, there is a smaller number of rental cars on hand this summer. There are also businesses that rent recreational vehicles, an alternative that would provide both accommodations as well as transportation.
You can combine these different modes of transportation and access all the area has to offer. Downtown Fairbanks is very walkable; the University of Alaska Fairbanks is offering free shuttles to their main attractions; and multiple other activities and attractions are offering transportation services to their establishments and back. With a little planning your trip to the Land of the Midnight Sun can come true!
