The leading progressive Councilmember kicks off her campaign with strong support from across City Hall
LOS ANGELES — Today, Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez officially launched her campaign for re-election to represent Los Angeles City Council District 1, kicking off with a powerful show of support from a coalition of high-profile endorsements across City Hall.
To start her launch week, Councilmember Hernandez is announcing endorsements by several of her colleagues on the Los Angeles City Council, including Councilmembers Ysabel Jurado, Hugo Soto-Martinez, Nithya Raman, Heather Hutt, and Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, as well as City Controller Kenneth Mejia, the City’s chief fiscal watchdog. The endorsements reflect her commitment to coalition-building and her proven ability to work across City Hall to deliver for her district. Throughout her first term, Hernandez has built strong relationships with her peers, working collaboratively to pass policies that address housing, community safety, and her care-first agenda — ensuring that city government meets the needs of all Angelenos.
“I’m proud to call Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez my colleague, my friend, and my compañera in the fight for a Los Angeles that truly serves working people,” said Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez. “Inside and outside City Hall, we’re building power together and taking on the corporate interests that put profits over people. From fighting for stronger tenant protections to holding the line for workers’ rights, Councilmember Hernandez has always stood on the right side of history. I’m honored to endorse her — because when we organize together, we win.”
“In City Hall, we need leaders who will stand firm for tenants, for working families, and for a Los Angeles where everyone has a seat at the table,” said Councilmember Nithya Raman. “Councilmember Hernandez has been that leader, time and again. I’ve seen firsthand how she takes on the toughest battles, whether it’s standing up to corporate landlords, reimagining public safety, or delivering real investments for her community. I’m proud to wholeheartedly endorse Councilmember Hernandez for re-election.”
“Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez is a force for her community,” said Councilmember Ysabel Jurado. “She has an unmatched dedication to her constituents, a vision for a stronger and more vibrant district, and the know-how to get things done. That’s why I am proud to support her re-election. She is a true champion for the people and we need more people like her in the City Council.”
“Councilmember Hernandez has been an incredible partner in the fight for a stronger Los Angeles,” said Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson. “Together, we’ve rolled up our sleeves and worked side by side to tackle tough challenges head-on — revitalizing MacArthur Park, expanding unarmed crisis response, and making the hard calls to deliver real progress for our communities. I’ve seen firsthand her ability to turn bold ideas into action and get things done. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with Councilmember Hernandez in City Hall and am proud to endorse her for her re-election to Council District 1.”
Together, these endorsements signal a growing momentum inside City Hall behind Hernandez’s care-first vision — and a shared belief that her leadership has been instrumental in building a Los Angeles that puts working people first and leaves no one behind.
“Serving the people of Council District 1 is the greatest honor of my life — and I don’t take that responsibility lightly,” said Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez. “Every decision I make is rooted in the belief that the people closest to the problem are closest to the solution. From Day 1, I have stood up to corporate interests, luxury developers and those who seek to profit off our people’s pain and labor — and I’ve fought to make sure the community finally has a seat at the table. Through it all, I’ve stayed grounded in my values and accountable to my constituents. I’m proud to have earned the trust and support of my colleagues, and I’m committed to continue building the bridges and coalitions we need to transform our care-first vision into reality. We’ve made incredible progress so far, and I’m ready to keep fighting — together.”
Since her historic election, Councilmember Hernandez has been a leading voice on the Council for progressive reform, championing affordable housing, tenant protections, unarmed crisis response, and economic justice. Throughout her first term, Hernandez has built strong relationships with her peers, working collaboratively to pass policies that address housing, community safety, and her care-first agenda — ensuring that local government meets the needs of all Angelenos. Her record includes landmark wins such as passing the strongest tenant protections in over 40 years, fighting to expand the unarmed crisis response program, securing $25 million in improvements for MacArthur Park, and co-authoring the Sanctuary City ordinance.
