Community invited to attend fundraiser that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
NORTH HILLS, CA — On Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, New Horizons — a San Fernando Valley-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities to reach their fullest potential — invites the public to its annual Walk on the Horizon 5K Run, Walk and Roll fundraising event at Lake Balboa/Anthony C. Beilenson Park, 6300 Balboa in Van Nuys, California, 91406. At this year’s event, New Horizons plans to raise much-needed funds to support its employment, residential and community outreach programs and services for the more than 1,200 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities it supports each year.
All interested participants are encouraged to sign up, form teams and raise money by registering at www.newhorizons-sfv.org/runwalk2019. Event day check-in/registration starts at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5K run at 8:30 a.m., and then the walk and roll walk-a-thon at 9:30 a.m., when Los Angeles’ newly elected city councilmember, John Lee (CD-12), will act as this year’s official “Honorary Starter.”
“Our annual walk-a-thons are among the agency’s premier events; which is why having John Lee, our local councilmember, there at one of his first public appearances makes it all the more special,” said John C. Brauer, M.A., president and CEO of New Horizons. “This type of fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity for our clients, family, friends, supporters and stakeholders to come together and have fun while raising money that will further integrate those we serve into the community. As with last year, I have personally created my own walk team, and I have invited all of my friends, family and staff to join me. And, folks who sign up on my team will get an added (surprise) bonus!”
All those who attend this fun event will be treated to a continental breakfast, music, raffles and post-walk refreshments. There will be plenty of photo opportunities at Balboa Park, too. Free “Tek” T-shirts go to the first 400 registered participants. New Horizons invites walkers, walking teams and sponsors.
This event is in partnership with Galpin Motors. For more information on New Horizons’ Walk on the Horizon fundraiser, now in its 12th year, or to register, visit www.newhorizons-sfv.org/runwalk2019, or contact Daryl Rubin at 818-894-7422 or at drubin@newhorizons-sfv.org.
