LOS ANGELES — Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) approved a resolution that marks another important step toward more sustainable skies at Van Nuys Airport (VNY). The Board voted to waive the $0.11 per gallon fuel delivery fee for unleaded aviation gasoline (avgas), reinforcing VNY’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Effective July 1, 2025, the waiver will apply to the delivery of both 94-octane and 100-octane unleaded avgas through existing Non-Exclusive Revocable Fuel Delivery Permits. The policy modification is designed to incentivize aircraft operators to transition away from leaded avgas — the last remaining lead-containing transportation fuel in the United States — and adopt cleaner-burning, unleaded alternatives.
“Removing the fuel delivery fee for unleaded avgas is a meaningful, near-term step that supports our broader sustainability goals and encourages aircraft operators to prepare for the future of clean aviation,” said Jacob Haik, Airport Manager, Van Nuys Airport. “This action helps accelerate the transition to safer, lower-emission fuel options, while maintaining our role as a good neighbor to the surrounding community.”
While VNY is exploring all verticals to implement cleaner fuel alternatives, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is still actively working toward the approval and widespread adoption of unleaded avgas to replace the currently used leaded fuel (100LL) in general aviation piston-engine aircraft. Currently, the FAA has approved unleaded avgas options for specific aircraft and engines, though a universal, drop-in replacement for 100LL is still under development.
The BOAC resolution is the latest in a series of policies aimed at reducing emissions from airport activity. Earlier this year, VNY became the first general aviation airport in the nation to adopt a Zero-Emission Ground Service Equipment Policy and Incentive Program, targeting a full transition of GSE vehicles to zero-emission models by 2030.
With this newest initiative, VNY adds momentum to growing efforts across the aviation industry to transition to unleaded fuel alternatives that safeguard public health and reduce environmental impact. The resolution was informed by stakeholder input and aligns with voluntary commitments made by fuel providers and fixed-base operators at VNY.
