TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama senior and Birmingham native Addison Miller is among 43 Americans selected to study in the United Kingdom through the prestigious Marshall Scholarship.

Miller is the fourth UA student to earn a Marshall Scholarship since 2020, making UA a top producer of Marshall Scholarship recipients among public universities and leader among Southeastern Conference universities over the past five years.

Miller is an Honors College student majoring in international and comparative education through New College with minors in the Dr. Robert E. Witt University Fellows Program, Blount Scholars Program and Chinese. She will use the Marshall Scholarship to pursue master’s degrees in politics and international relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies and higher education studies at University College London.

“Winning the Marshall Scholarship validates that I am on the right path,” Miller said. “In education and international affairs, the problems you face often feel so big that you have no hope of solving them. While I like to think that I have gotten good at persevering through the uncertainty, having this marker that I have done something worthwhile for Tuscaloosa and the world means a lot to me.”

In May, Miller received Phi Beta Kappa’s national Key into Public Service Scholarship and was recognized at the organization’s conference in Washington, D.C. One month prior, she received the Allen J. Going Award for having the highest GPA in the incoming class of Phi Beta Kappa at UA.

Through a Critical Language Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State, Miller studied Chinese at Tamkang University in New Taipei, Taiwan, last summer. She also studied at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan.

According to the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission, Marshall Scholarships fund young Americans of high ability to study for graduate degrees in the United Kingdom. Past winners include Supreme Court Justices, Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, MacArthur Genius Grant awardees and numerous professors and university presidents.

“Entering this community of extraordinary people is the cherry on top,” said Miller. “My experiences have taught me the value of having a strong support network, not only mentors but also peers to share your successes and struggles. I am honored to have the opportunity to study and learn alongside these other young Americans.”

The UA Office of External Scholarships and Fellowships assists students in the pursuit of national and international awards including the Marshall, Rhodes, Goldwater and Boren, among others. Students interested in applying for awards that require an institutional endorsement can learn more on the External Scholarships and Fellowships website.
