Officially opening July 2, 1971, the Plaza Hotel & Casino was originally named “Union Plaza” paying homage to the Union Pacific Railroad Depot where it was built. Passenger train service continued until 1997 via Amtrak’s Desert Wind. The Amtrak station and ticket windows were connected to the hotel, giving it the distinction of being the only U.S. train station located in a casino.

At it’s opening, the Plaza was the largest downtown property at 22-stories, 504 rooms and a 66,000 sq. ft. casino. In the 1980’s the second tower and convention center were added, making the Plaza the first downtown hotel to cater to the meetings and events market. Once a one-of-a-kind swimming pool, the Plaza’s iconic glass dome overlooking Main and Fremont Streets was where a popular scene in the movie Casino was filmed and is now home to the renowned Oscar’s steakhouse.

During its fifty years, the Plaza has earned a revered place in Vegas history – from its Rat Pack-era roots to its prominent place in pop culture as featured in numerous films, TV shows and music videos. Over the last decade, the Plaza has undergone numerous and significant renovations and improvements to enhance the guest experience and further revitalize its historic location on Main Street in downtown Las Vegas.

Guest rooms were fully refurbished in 2011 when the Plaza completed a property-wide renovation. In 2019, a $15 million renovation created the upgraded Luxe Rooms and Suites on the top floors of the North Tower, offering premium guest accommodations with high end décor and energy efficiency and technology upgrades.

The Plaza also transformed its rooftop pool into a “retro Palm Springs meets classic downtown Las Vegas” inspired outdoor space with a wet deck, hot tub, private cabanas, bar, and food truck. With 12 Pickleball courts, the Plaza is the only hotel/ casino in Las Vegas with so many courts dedicated to this fast-growing sport. Upgraded hotel suites with direct balcony access to the pool offer a unique amenity.

Committed to supporting public art, the Plaza boasts three unforgettable 21-story murals by internationally known artists, Shepard Fairey, D*Face and Faile on its North Tower. The trio of murals – likely the largest ever installed on a single building – adds a vibrant artistic flare without compromising the Plaza’s historic integrity.

The Plaza also opened the Core Arena, downtown’s first and only equestrian center bringing rodeo back to downtown Las Vegas. The Core Arena is a multipurpose venue that can host everything from monster truck shows and demolition derbies to various sporting events – further diversifying the downtown experience and attracting more business and people to the area all year long.

Guests at the Plaza enjoy a variety of amenities that have been upgraded over the years, including an expansive casino floor with players’ favorite slot machines and table games, a fully renovated William Hill Race & Sports Book, a classic Vegas showroom, refurbished ballroom and meeting space, and downtown’s only bingo hall, offering six daily sessions and the highest payouts in Las Vegas.

The Plaza has enjoyed 50 years of historic memories and is poised to create even more with plans to further revitalize Main Street and improve connectivity with the burgeoning Symphony Park development.
