These workers are protesting the impending layoffs of 2966 unit members from a unit that now numbers only 4800 people. Thirty (30) months ago, when massive layoffs began, this unit had 7200 members. They are responsible for all student, employee and fiscal record keeping at more than 1000 district work sites. More than ¾ (three-quarters) of all clerical staff assigned to district schools have been laid off during the past thirty (30) months. Fifty (50%) of the technical and professional unit members who work in district offices have been cut during those same thirty (30) months.

District funding for trained library staff in elementary school libraries has been eliminated. Many elementary school libraries will shut their doors; some will become school storage rooms. Each elementary school library contains about an average of a $500,000 book inventory. Most district students have limited or no access to books outside of school. School libraries also provide the only internet access for more than half of all district students.

Library Aides will present school board members with over 5000 letters of support from district parents.

The LAUSD office, technical and professional unit is represented by the California School Employees Association, the largest union nationally of non-teaching (classified) school workers. (http://www.csea.com)
