Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) introduced more than 100 amendments to the House Republican budget betrayal — Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill — a proposal that the CHC strongly opposes for its cruel, shortsighted, and dangerous impact on working families, immigrants, seniors, students, and vulnerable communities across the country.
We already went down this road in May. The GOP budget betrayal was a disaster before heading to the Senate and it’s no better today.
The CHC amendments would correct course on a broad range of issues. We have the policies for a better, fairer, healthier and safer America.
“Our amendments — the same ones that could have made this bill palatable in May — should be subject to real debate, to real votes and to serious consideration by the majority,” said CHC Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “The CHC has the policy depth to build a budget worthy of the American people. Instead we are discussing quite possibly the worst, most dangerous budget betrayal ever imposed on this body.”
The CHC’s amendments reflect a bold and comprehensive vision for a fairer nation, including:
- Protecting immigrant children and families by banning ICE raids at schools and places of worship, shielding children with life-threatening illnesses from deportation, and expanding student aid to DACA recipients.
- Safeguarding food security by reversing proposed cuts to SNAP, preserving nutrition assistance for seniors and families, and updating the Thrifty Food Plan to reflect the real cost of groceries.
- Defending public safety by blocking giveaways to the gun lobby and supporting oversight tools like body cameras for immigration enforcement.
- Preserving health care access by striking provisions that dismantle the Affordable Care Act and slash Medicaid.
- Investing in clean energy and environmental justice by defending tax credits for energy-efficient homes and redirecting fossil fuel subsidies to climate-resilient infrastructure.
- Promoting housing affordability through expanded tax credits for low-income and first-generation homebuyers.
- Standing up for workers’ rights and tribal sovereignty by preserving collective bargaining, ensuring fair FAA employment practices, and strengthening tribal consultation on infrastructure projects.
- Ensuring billionaires pay their fair share with a new minimum income tax on ultra-wealthy Americans.
- Countering hate crimes with a $500 million federal investment in anti-hate and civil rights protections.
This bill is not yet law — the House would have to agree on the Senate version. The CHC remains unwavering in its commitment to working families, immigrants, and communities of color—and will continue to use every legislative tool available to fight back against this budget assault.
