(SACRAMENTO, CA) — Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters) has named Yolo Crisis Nursery the 2026 Nonprofit of the Year for Assembly District 4, recognizing the organization’s exceptional service to children and families and its lasting impact across Yolo County.
“Yolo Crisis Nursery has been such an important resource for our Yolo County families during difficult times for 25 years,” said Aguiar-Curry. “Their compassionate, around-the-clock care for our young children and their commitment to helping families get stronger make them so deserving of this recognition. I’m proud to honor them as the Fourth Assembly District’s 2026 Nonprofit of the Year.”
Founded in 2001, the Yolo Crisis Nursery (YCN) was established to provide a safe, nurturing environment for children from birth to age five during times of family crisis, while helping prevent child abuse and neglect through trauma-informed care and wraparound family services. Over the past 25 years, the organization has served more than 13,000 children and families across the region. In 2014, YCN became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, strengthening its ability to expand services and deepen its impact. Most recently, the organization moved into a larger facility, significantly increasing capacity and introducing additional supportive programs, including supervised visitation services and a fathers’ support group. Today, YCN continues its mission of strengthening families and supporting children, serving as a vital community resource throughout Yolo County.
The California Nonprofit of the Year program is sponsored by CalNonprofits. In partnership with the California State Assembly and Senate Select Committees on the Nonprofit Sector, CalNonprofits recognizes one nonprofit annually from each legislative district. Since its launch, more than 1,000 organizations have been honored statewide. This year’s celebration took place on May 20, California Nonprofits Day.
“We are honored to receive this recognition,” said Executive Director Heather Sleuter, Yolo Crisis Nursery. “This award reflects 25 years of community support and our ongoing mission to provide a safe place for children while helping families build stability for their futures.”
Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry represents California’s 4th Assembly District, which includes all of Lake, Colusa, Napa, and Yolo Counties, and part of Sonoma County. She serves as the Assembly Majority Leader and Chair of the California Women’s Legislative Caucus.
