Washington, D.C. — Statement from Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Adriano Espaillat on the Trump administration’s latest attack on the 14th Amendment.
“Birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the Constitution, and just this summer the Supreme Court declined to disturb that constitutional guarantee. No President has the authority to decide who is American or rewrite the 14th Amendment. President Trump’s latest attacks on birthright citizenship and so-called ‘birthright tourism’ are another xenophobic attempt to divide our country—going so far as to strip citizenship from children born in the United States to a U.S. citizen parent, tearing families apart in the process. We will fight this unconstitutional assault on American families.”

“La ciudadanía por nacimiento está garantizada por la Constitución, y este mismo verano la Corte Suprema se negó a alterar esa garantía constitucional. Ningún presidente tiene la autoridad de decidir quién es estadounidense ni de reescribir la 14.ª Enmienda. Los más recientes ataques del presidente Trump a la ciudadanía por nacimiento y al llamado ‘turismo de nacimiento’ son otro intento xenófobo de dividir a nuestro país — llegando al extremo de arrebatarle la ciudadanía a niños nacidos en los Estados Unidos de un padre o madre ciudadano estadounidense, desgarrando familias en el proceso. Lucharemos contra este ataque inconstitucional a las familias estadounidenses.”
