LOS ANGELES, CA — Tomorrow, September 14th, Assemblymember Mark González will be joined by San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, law enforcement officials, broadband representatives, and community advocates to urge Governor Gavin Newsom to sign AB 1941, a bill that holds criminals who have engaged in Copper Wire Theft accountable.
In Los Angeles, over seven miles of copper wire was stolen from the iconic Sixth Street Bridge alone. In 2024, the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting received nearly 45,000 service requests for outages—many due to wire theft—with some repairs taking up to six months to complete. AB 1941 will create new tools for law enforcement to combat copper wire theft by targeting repeat and organized offenders who steal or traffic prohibited metal materials.
