His Royal Highness Will Tour the Estate and Lay a Wreath at Washington’s Tomb
Mount Vernon, VA, September 25, 2026 — His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon on the morning of Thursday, October 1, as part of a visit to the United States marking America’s 250th anniversary. He will be accompanied by British Ambassador to the United States Sir Christian Turner.
The Duke will visit Mount Vernon’s new Education Center, the Mansion, a Revolutionary War encampment and the Washington Library. He also will meet historical experts and lay a wreath at George Washington’s Tomb.
The visit will be a return to Mount Vernon for The Duke of Edinburgh, who previously visited the estate in 2001 as the Earl of Wessex. Mount Vernon has welcomed generations of the British royal family, including King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939; Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1951 and 1991; and King Charles III, who visited as Prince of Wales with Princess Anne in 1970 and returned with Camilla, then Duchess of Cornwall, in 2015.

As we mark America’s 250th anniversary, The Duke’s visit offers another opportunity to consider that history and the ties that endure today.”
Mount Vernon will remain open to the public on Oct. 1.
Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, is owned and operated by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, the oldest national historic preservation organization in the United States. The estate is open to visitors and includes the Mansion, a museum and education center, gardens, tombs, a working farm, a functioning distillery, and a gristmill, as well as the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon.
