Metro is hosting a public update on the I-405 Wilmington Avenue to Main Street Improvements Project. After releasing the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR)/Environmental Assessment (EA) on Aug. 5, Metro invites the public to learn more about the environmental review process and share feedback.
The public hearings will detail how the public can participate in the official public comment period, ask questions and learn how the project benefits seek to do the following:
- Fix slow carpool lanes and improve bottleneck merging distances to address elevated crash rates, including 4,335 injury collisions, 201 severe injuries, and 48 fatalities between 2019 and 2023, along a 3-mile segment of I-405 carrying over 300,000 daily vehicles.
- Safely connect residents to transit, schools, local businesses and jobs by integrating pedestrian and cyclist improvements such as ADA-compliant sidewalks, curb ramps, upgraded pedestrian crossings, improved bridge lighting, and enhanced bicycle facilities.
- Promote safer, more reliable freight and goods movement along a vital regional transit artery while prioritizing equitable, local streetscape improvements for Carson residents.
The 45-day comment period
WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 20, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 25, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Carson Events Center, 801 East Carson Street, Carson, Calif.
PROJECT BACKGROUND: This project is in the early planning and environmental phase and is funded locally through voter-approved Measure R, with future implementation phases expected to rely on a combination of local, state and federal sources.
Metro and Caltrans are evaluating three alternatives to identify the safest, most equitable path forward:
- Alternative 1: No improvements would take place. As traffic demand increases throughout the project corridor, existing operational issues would not be addressed or alleviated.
- Alternative 2: Construct two auxiliary lanes on northbound I-405 and two auxiliary lanes on southbound I-405, as well as Complete Streets elements and Transportation System Management (TSM) and Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies, where feasible.
- Alternative 3: Construct and implement Complete Streets elements and TSM/TDM strategies, where feasible.
