A group of young designers ages 6–11 will take the runway this summer as the Dexter Park Sewing Club presents “Metamorphosis,” a kids fashion show celebrating creativity, sustainability and the art of transforming the ordinary into something beautiful.
The free community event will take place on Saturday, August 22, from 2–4 PM at Dexter Park, Rd., Kagel Canyon, CA 91342. The afternoon will feature creations sewn by the young members of the Dexter Park Sewing Club, along with live music and a special breakdance performance by the Concrete All Stars.
Over the past several months, the young sewists have worked together under the guidance of Tess Brown, sewing teacher and costume designer, meeting weekly to develop their sewing skills and bring their ideas to life. The group includes both beginning and intermediate sewists, who have created skirts, tops, pants and dresses using primarily upcycled and leftover fabrics.
The inspiration behind “Metamorphosis” is the transformation of materials that might otherwise be forgotten or discarded. Old curtains, fabric remnants and leftovers from other projects are given a new life as one-of-a-kind garments. The young designers chose the name “Metamorphosis” to represent this transformation and their own evolution as creative makers.
The children themselves have taken the lead in bringing the event together. A crew of approximately 10 young participants will serve as designers, models and MCs, introducing the audience to the pieces they created and sharing the stories behind their work.
“Metamorphosis is really about seeing possibility in something that other people might overlook,” said Tess Brown, sewing teacher and costume designer. “The kids are learning to sew, but they are also learning how to create, collaborate, problem-solve and think differently about what we throw away. They have completely embraced the idea that fashion can be both beautiful and sustainable.”
Adding to the energy of the afternoon will be a live DJ set by DJ @toonz_concrete, as well as a breakdance performance by the Concrete All Stars, featuring:

The event will also feature young dancers Mia, age 9; Jru Angelo, age 5; and Leo, age 3.
A Celebration of Kids, Creativity & Slow Fashion
The Dexter Park Sewing Club is a free program hosted by the Dexter Park & Recreation Department, providing children with an opportunity to learn sewing and develop their creativity in a supportive community environment.
Families interested in introducing their children to sewing are encouraged to attend the fashion show and learn more about the program. Whether a child is an experienced sewist or has never picked up a needle and thread, the club offers an opportunity to learn practical skills while exploring creativity and design.
Community members can also support the young designers by donating clean, usable fabric, fabric remnants or old curtains that can be transformed into future creations. Donations help the club continue teaching children about sustainability, upcycling and the principles of slow fashion.
