WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) issued the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked a war powers resolution that he cosponsored to rein in Donald Trump’s war against Iran:

“Thirteen American lives lost and tens of billions of taxpayer dollars spent in just three weeks since Donald Trump plunged us into war without Congressional authorization. There is still no plan, no clear justification, and no end in sight.

“Americans called for lower prices, not endless wars. Trump’s unauthorized war in Iran is costing taxpayers nearly $1 billion a day. The price of gas is up by over $1 per gallon, in addition to electricity bills climbing due to Trump’s war on clean energy. And the Republican majority in Congress refuses to challenge the president or conduct needed oversight. The American people deserve better.”

Today’s vote marked the third time that Senate Republicans have blocked efforts to limit Trump’s power to use military force in Iran. Padilla slammed Senate Republicans for blocking a previous war powers resolution that he cosponsored to end United States military involvement against Iran unless explicitly authorized by Congress. He also previously condemned Trump’s initial preemptive strikes against Iran without Congressional authorization.
