LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, Assemblymember Mark González has released the following statement after the passage of the LA County Board of Supervisors’ motion to amend the Public Peace, Morals and Welfare Ordinance. This ordinance will require all law enforcement officers operating within the County to wear visible identification and agency affiliation and prohibit the wearing of masks while interacting with the public in the course of their duties within unincorporated properties of LA County.
“ICE is more than just a threat to our state,” said Assemblymember Mark González, “their reckless, lawless actions have emboldened masked bounty hunters who terrorize everyday Angelenos.
As a proud co-author of SB 627 and SB 805, the state laws that ban secret police in California, I stand in solidarity with the LA County Board of Supervisors in demanding that ICE follow the law, protect the peace, and identify themselves when they troll our neighborhoods. No agency, no badge, and no individual should ever be able to hide behind a mask while operating in our neighborhoods. We will not allow fear tactics or shadow operations to take root in our state—not now, not ever.”
Assemblymember Mark González is the Assembly Majority Whip. He serves on the Committees on Appropriations, Health, Public Safety, Rules, and Utilities & Energy. He represents the 54th District, composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Commerce, Montebello, and Vernon.
