LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, Assembly Budget Chair Jesse Gabriel (D – Encino) presented a novelty check to the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles symbolizing the recent appropriation in the state budget of $2.5 million to support infrastructure and ADA improvements at the Mid Valley Family YMCA in Van Nuys.

“The Mid Valley Family YMCA has played an important role in the San Fernando Valley, creating opportunities for children, families, and seniors to learn, grow, and thrive,” said Assembly Budget Chair Jesse Gabriel (D – Encino). “This $2.5 million investment will help modernize the Y’s facilities, improve accessibility, and help expand its positive impact on our community for years to come.”

“This $2.5 million investment is about more than improving a facility. It’s about investing in the health, connection, and well-being of an entire community,” said Victor Dominguez, President & CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, the Center for Community Well-Being. “The Mid Valley Family YMCA serves more than 10,000 residents each year, providing a place where families find support, young people discover opportunities and neighbors build a sense of belonging. We are grateful to Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel for recognizing the importance of these spaces and helping us ensure they continue to serve our communities for generations to come.”

This funding is a one-time allocation of $2.5 million to support critical improvements at the Mid Valley Family YMCA that will create safer, more welcoming spaces for youth, families, seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. This allocation is part of a broader $16.5 million state investment benefiting the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, which will serve YMCAs across the greater Los Angeles area.

The upgrades will also help preserve the more than 60-year-old facility and ensure it can continue serving the community for years to come. The YMCA serves more than 10,000 residents annually through youth development, sports, academic support, water safety, health and wellness, food security, workforce development, mental health, and services for seniors and other underserved residents, with more than half of those served coming from low-income households. By investing in these improvements, this funding will strengthen the YMCA’s ability to provide safe, accessible, and inclusive programs while ensuring residents have a welcoming place to stay healthy, build relationships, and access important community services. The Mid Valley Family YMCA serves more than 700 families across the San Fernando Valley, including Van Nuys, Encino, Lake Balboa, and Reseda.

For more than 140 years, the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles has provided healthy living, youth development and social responsibility programs across the region. The YMCA is committed to rebuilding the communities it serves by providing equitable programs and services to empower all Angelenos, focusing on fighting food insecurity, providing equity in education, offering medical and mental health resources, and more.

Assemblymember Gabriel has partnered with the Mid Valley Family YMCA on multiple food distributions and community events, including during the Assemblymember’s Annual Valley Day of Service.
