The Theatricum Botanicum is presenting two of William Shakespeare’s most romantic plays.  Kicking off the Theatricum’s six-play repertory season on Saturday June 4 at 8 pm will be The Merry Wives of Windsor with Ellen Geer directing.  The next afternoon the Theatricum will present their signature production of  “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” helmed by Melora Marshall, will be performed at 3:30 p.m.  Both plays will continue throughout the summer in the Theatricum’s 2,299-seat outdoor amphitheater.

Fans of Alan Blumenfeld won’t want to miss interpretation of Falstaff, Shakespeare’s most beloved scoundrel.  This notorious rascal woos two wealthy wives simultaneously-with identical love letters!  The ladies soon discover Falstaff’s schemes and merrily engage to discredit this trickster suitor.  With the assistance of their husbands, Falstaff receives his comeuppance in this gleeful comedy that sees the duper duped and the wives vindicated.

“The Merry Wives of Windsor” is the only Shakespeare play to deal exclusively with the contemporary English life, and has been called “the original sitcom,” complete with wacky

situations and a wide array of comic characters.  Though Shakespeare had killed off Sir John Falstaff in Henry V, he was so overwhelmed with requests to bring back the portly knight — including a request of Queen Elizabeth I herself — that he finally relented with Merry Wives.

On Friday, July 22 and July 29 a buffet dinner featuring traditional British fare, with Windsor wenches and country lads in attendance, will be served in the theater’s adjacent gardens at 6:30 p.m. followed by an 8 p.m. performance of “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”  A separate admission or combination performance and buffet dinner package will be available.

You’ll find that the Theatricum will be presenting a world of wonder, magic, and romance, comical misunderstandings and the path of unrequited love being resolved an all is reconciled in the production of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream.”  LA Weekly has written that they can’t think of any more fitting venue that the Topanga Canyon’s rustic, outdoor Theatricum Botanicum.   They state, “Actor director Melora Marshall’s brisk, boisterous production and her ensemble’s commitment to revelry complement the canyon backdrop.  A Midsummer Night’s Dream features Jonathan Blandino, Willow Geer, Amy Greenspan, and Jackson McCord Thompson as the lovers.

The Theatricum will offer Greek buffet “Dream Dinners,” with a costumed cast of fairies in attendance, every Thursday evening in August at 6:30 p.m. in the adjacent gardens followed by an 8 pm performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Separate admission for the performance or a combo package is available.

The Merry Wives of Windsor will continue through September 10 and Midsummer Night’s Dream will continue through September 25.  The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum is located at 1419 North Topanga Canyon Boulevard.  For a complete schedule of performances and to purchase tickets, please call (310) 455-2322 before May 24 or go online to
