To register the name of your business in L.A. County:

1. Check that the business name you want is available by searching L.A. County's database-click on the link above.

2. Complete the Fictitious Business Name Statement application form and sign it at the bottom-click on the link above.

3. Take the application form to any Los Angeles County Recorder's Office and pay the filing fee of $23 + $4 for each additional business name and/or registrant.

4. Within 30 days of filing the Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA you must publish the information in a newspaper of general circulation.

To Publish Your DBA:

Fax, mail or email your DBA to us to be published for a total cost of $40. This covers the four week legal ad publication in the Weekly Valley Vantage, a newspaper of general circulation in Los Angeles County, Superior Court Case #SFC858.

Following the four week publication, we file a "proof of publication" with the County Recorder within 30 days as required by law.

You will need to send us:

- a copy of your filed Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA - it will say "COPY" at the top right, and will have an 11-digit file number and the date it was filed).

- a check payable to "Van Nuys News Press" for $40.00 (or call 818-707-2507 to pay with a credit or debit card).

EITHER:

Fax your copy to 818-286-9579 (please include your telephone number) then call 818-707-2507 to confirm receipt of the fax.

Mail a copy of the form with a check or money order to: P.O.Box 2444, Van Nuys, CA 91404.

Los Angeles County Recorder offices can be very busy and you may endure a waiting time of several hours to file your Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA. If you mail your statement to the County it can take several weeks to get it back.

To have your Los Angeles County Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA filed and published as a package:

- Check the availability of your business name online (click on the link above), then complete the application form.

- Mail the signed Fictitious Business Name Statement to P.O.Box 2444, Van Nuys, CA 91404. Faxed copies can not be recorded in Los Angeles County-application forms must have an ORIGINAL SIGNATURE.

Please Include:

- One check payable to "RR/CC" (Registrar Recorder/County Clerk) for $23.00 + $4 for each extra business name and/or applicant. Write your driver's license number and expiration date at the top of the check.

- One check payable to "Van Nuys News Press' for $50.00 to cover the 4 week publication and the filing service.

We will file your Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA with the Los Angeles County Recorder and mail you back your certified copy. We will publish the Fictitious Business Name Statement for four weeks in the Weekly Valley Vantage newspaper and file the proof of publication with the County, completing your Los Angeles County Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA Registration.

Then What?

Your Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA lasts for five years from the date it was filed, plus a 40-day grace period.

If any of your business information changes (other than your residential address) e.g. business name, business address, change of partnership, incorporation etc, you need to file a new Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA.

If you have no changes, file your Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA in Los Angeles County within five years and 40 days of filing it. The fee for a refile is $18 + $4 for each additional business name and/or registrant, and you do not need to publish it in a newspaper again. It will last for another five years.

WARNING:

YOU WILL RECIEVE LETTERS TELLING YOU TO PUBLISH YOUR FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME STATEMENT EVEN AFTER YOU HAVE PUBLISHED IT.

These letters are not from the County, they are from private companies. When you file a Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA it becomes public information. Some private companies purchase the information of every person who files a Fictitious Business Name Statement in Los Angeles County, so you will probably recieve solicitations for various services pertaining to new businesses. The letters telling you to publish your Fictitious Business Name Statement/DBA are solicitations, not official notices. The companies sending you those letters do not know if you have already published your Fictitious Business Name or not, they send the letters to EVERYONE who files a Fictitious Business Name Statement.
