Kailua-Kona, Big Island of Hawaii — Kona Brewing Company once again brings a taste of paradise to craft beer drinkers from Hawaii to the eastern shores of the mainland with Wailua Wheat, available now through September, 2012. Now in its fifth year of production, Wailua Wheat is brewed with real passion fruit puree as the key tropical ingredient in this Aloha Series craft beer.

Named after Maui’s Wailua Falls, Wailua Wheat has a crisp, refreshing taste that complements summer foods including grilled mahi mahi, barbecue pork ribs, salads and Tahitian vanilla ice cream. Wailua Wheat won the gold medal in the Fruit Beer category at last year’s US Open Beer Championships, as well as at Best of the Northwest/Pacific US Beer Tasting Championships in both 2004 and 2002. Wailua Wheat has an ABV of 5.4%, an IBU of 15, and is brewed with generous amounts of Hallertau hops.

“Wailua Wheat’s light flavor has won over fans across the mainland who enjoy a good light summer brew,” said Kona president Mattson Davis. “The passion fruit really brings home the taste of Hawaii that first hooks visitors to our island pubs where we serve it on draught year-round.”

Wailua Wheat can be found in stores and on draught by using Kona Brewing’s online beerfinder.

Kona Brewing Company was started in the spring of 1994 by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa, who had a dream to create fresh, local island brews made with spirit, passion and quality. It is a Hawaii-born and Hawaii-based craft brewery that prides itself on brewing the freshest beer of exceptional quality, closest to market. This helps to minimize its carbon footprint by reducing shipping of raw materials, finished beer and wasteful packaging materials. The brewery is headquartered where it began, in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. It has grown into Hawaii’s largest brewery, has three restaurant sites in Hawaii and beer distribution reaching 31 states and Japan. It is the 13th largest craft brewery in the country.

The Putting Solution was developed as an aid to help teach all golfers the proper mechanics and feel in the uncompensated putting stroke. It is based on geometric principal and the physics of motion involved in putting. It is, itself, geometrically correct in all aspects and what it does can be proven mathematically. But the simple truth is that most golfers don’t care about the math, or the geometry involved in a putting stroke. They just want to putt better.

The Putting Solution

So, if you want to putt better too, try the Putting Solution. It will improve your game and here’s why. It maintains the proper plane angle of the putter during the stroke. It also enforces the motion of the proper plane line in a pure, uncompensated putting stroke by training the hands and arms using the “muscle memory” of the correct putting motion. It’s easy to use, gives us instant feedback on the proper stroke and is guaranteed to take strokes off your game. The reason that most golfers aren’t good putters is that they treat a putting stroke as if it were a golf swing. Now, I know you are thinking that a putt is a golf swing but they are really two separate “types” of swings and can’t be treated alike. We always swing a golf club or a putter in a circle. This circle is on an angled plane. In a golf swing, if you draw a straight line from your left shoulder, down the straight left arm and shaft of the club toward the ground, you will find the bottom or the low point of this circle. So, the center of the circle in a golf swing is the left shoulder.

The left arm and the club revolve around this center point or the center of the radius of the circle. A putt is different, if you are using a shoulder stroke. Most golfers today use a “shoulder stroke” as opposed to an “arm stroke”. The arm stroke is a more outdated stroke used by golfers of an earlier era. If you are using a shoulder stroke, the center of the radius of the circle changes from the left shoulder to a point somewhere under the chin, depending on the angle of your putter. Think about someone using a long putter. Where is the top of it anchored during the stroke? It’s positioned at the center of the radius of the stroke or under the chin. It’s the same thing with a standard length putter. We are putting on a different circle than we are swinging on. You can’t mix the two or you will have to compensate something in the stroke to get the putter face on the ball.

So what changes on the “putting circle”? Well, it’s all about your ball position. It has to be placed at the bottom of the circle, which has now moved from just off your left heel, (in the full stroke), to a point somewhere slightly left of your chin or just slightly left of the center of your stance, if you are square. So why is ball position so vitally important in the putting stroke? It’s because of what the head of the putter does during the stroke. It makes what’s known as a horizontal hinge action. In other words, it opens going back and closes moving forward. It moves, following the circle, backward, upward and inward during the backstroke and downward, outward and forward during the down stroke. So, if the ball is in the wrong position, the face of the putter will not be square at impact. It will either be open or closed or a compensation will occur to account for the incorrect position of the ball. Now, let’s examine the “angled plane”. There are three basic planes. Picture a house and they are easy to envision.

The walls are on a vertical plane, the floors are on a horizontal plane and the roof pitch is the angled plane. We play golf on this angled plane. When we properly sole the putter, (put it flat on the ground), the shaft can only occupy one plane angle. Different putters have different angles. No matter what angle your particular putter occupies, it must be maintained during the putting stroke. The top bar of the Putting Solution is designed to accommodate any of these putter angles because of its patented adjustability. The Putting Solution also reinforces the proper plane line. The plane line is the same thing as the target line. During the stroke, the shaft of the putter always ‘points’ at the plane line. As the head is doing it’s thing; opening and closing, moving back, up and in and down, out and forward, the shaft moves straight back and straight through.

This is the true beauty of the Putting Solution. It takes the emphasis of the putting motion off of the complicated actions of the head of the putter and places it on the shaft. It simply moves straight back and straight through. The Putting Solution will train your muscles to create this uncompensated motion of the putting stroke by teaching you to trace the plane line and maintain the proper plane angle created by the shaft of your putter. As long as the ball is in the proper position, it is geometrically impossible to hit an off line putt using this method. Now, we certainly can’t hit every putt we stand over perfectly every time but if we train with the Putting Solution and understand what is does, then you will get better by getting more consistent, more comfortable over a putt and more confidant in the stroke. Better putting yields better golf. If you want to be a better golfer, get a Putting Solution and use it. Don’t worry about the geometry or the physics or any of the technical parts of the putting stroke. The Putting Solution does all of that for you. Just get one and practice. I guarantee you will improve your game. (Pictured Above: Professional Golfer George C. Thomas practices with “The Putting Solution” after a round at Malibu Golf Club.

By Mark Underwood

2012 is upon us and many of us are thinking about what the New Year will bring. This time of year is an occasion to get us thinking about our health – specifically brain health. A healthy lifestyle is easy to understand but not everyone realizes the more you work out your brain, the better you’ll be able to process and remember information. Carve out time to give your brain work outs. You can do that by creating your own “health club” that includes ongoing learning. Make a commitment to keep learning, no matter what your age or stage of life, and you are automatically improving your brain power.

Learning curve
College, high school, and elementary school students all the way down to K-4 are continually engaged in stimulating learning experiences. These young students don’t have to work on brain fitness because for them, everyday learning is a habit. But that’s not true as we grow older. Think of the brain’s inner workings this way. Some of the circuits—conduits of information and memory slow down. As we decrease our need to keep the brain as fit as a student studying for college exams, the creation of new neural pathways diminishes. So what can you do to have a sharper brain? Plenty. Brain fitness isn’t rocket science. Start by making a commitment to learning something new on a regular basis, weekly or daily and then add in other challenging ways to give your brain a regular boost of energy. A growing body of research actually also shows that people who commit to lifelong learning can lower their risk of

Brain Health and Power

Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Jump start your brain power
You may not realize it but your brain power has incredible potential when it is “sharpened” and kept fit. There’s no better time than now to invest in your brain’s fitness. As millions of people grow older, many experience age-related changes like forgetfulness or decreased concentration skills. Some people find they have difficulty sleeping and their short-term memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Did you know your short-term memory is like a scratch-pad for temporary recall of information being processed? In order to understand this sentence your brain needs to remember the beginning as you read move along toward the end and get to the period. About 70 million baby boomers are heading to retirement in the next few years. Many people join health clubs to stay fit and others exercise at home with family and friends. If you are heading to retirement, make sure you continue to exercise your brain. By learning something new you are breaking the way you think about topics and ideas. You are using brain pathways that may not have been used if you hadn’t ramped up your brain calisthenics.

Brain health tips—a ‘no-brainer’Here are some things you can do to keep your brain sharp and fit:

Use your senses to learn. Know how you learn best, and then use it to your advantage. Some people learn best with audio tapes, others prefer videos or an in-person classroom.

Stay Organized. Take notes. Use both words and pictures. Take advantage of calendars, date books and other organizational tools to help you concentrate while learning.

Journal: Record information of your learning milestones by keeping a journal. Writing down your experiences helps build on previous knowledge and creates good retention.

Participate in educational experiences. Take an adult education class or enroll in a technical college course.

Take up a new hobby. People who enjoy life have found new outlets like quilting, woodworking and other hobbies.

Take up a new sport. Have you thought about learning to ice skate, curl, play badminton, take up golfing or numerous other sports? Your local parks and recreation department probably has numerous opportunities for you along with other community resources.

Play board games and puzzles. The more you play the better your mental dexterity will likely become.

It’s time to stoke the fires of aging in the brain. Build your own “health club” which includes a variety of brain fitness activities. It’s never too late to learn something new and feed an aging brain.

By Mark Underwood

In the 1970s Ricky Nelson song, “Garden Party, one of the refrains goes, “You can’t please everyone so you’ve got to please yourself.” That may ring true to you if you’re constantly stressed about making everyone around you happy.

Have you ever wondered how some people are able to conquer worrying about everything all the time? First off, they probably know that worry, stress and anxiety can lead to fear, tension, anxiety, anger, and exhaustion. That’s why they’ve decided to make changes in their lives.

Some studies have shown that changing lifestyle practices can help decrease stress and improve the quality of your life even beyond your best expectations. According to the American Institute of Stress, over 110 million Americans take medication for stress related causes every week. Those numbers go up when the holidays come along. People who are already predisposed to stress often find themselves feeling blue and more stressed out than usual at this time of year.

Worry less, enjoy life more
Most of us worry about things that make us feel stressed, but some people spend an excessive amount of time worrying about tomorrow. Someone once said “Don’t tell me that worry isn’t good for you. I know better. The things I worry about don’t happen.” Many chronic worrywarts probably wish they could change the way they view the world, but they simply don’t know how to stop worrisome thoughts.

Stress is a natural reaction to an enfolding possible problem. When we feel stressed and start worrying, those thoughts trigger an alarm in the brain, telling our bodies that something may be wrong. The fight or flight response calls in the nervous system and ask it to respond. Hormones are released, jolting the body into action. Muscles become tense, pulse increases, and breathing increases. Heightening the senses during a crisis is essential to survival. This is a natural and important biological response.

The problem is some people can’t shut off worrying. Keep in mind our bodies are designed for short bursts of stressful activity, but ongoing daily stress often means that the system has been left ‘on’ to respond. If you often feel stressed and tired, you may be getting signals that your body is over-worked. Stress varies from person to person, but it can involve, mental, physical or behavioral changes. If you have difficulty concentrating, have headaches, tight muscles or have difficulty sleeping, these may be stress signals you shouldn’t ignore. Some people may experience a combination of signals. Ultimately, if stress and anxiety are not resolved, it may impact your ability to work effectively. It can also increase the risk of injury and disease.

Make new lifestyle choices

Learn relaxation and mindfulness techniques.

Have a healthy diet. When we have a healthy diet and get adequate rest, we tend to remain healthy and feel positive about ourselves. Good sleep and nutrition also help maintain more steady levels or our so-called stress hormones which keep us more stable emotionally.

Exercise. For people who are prone to anxiety there’s real evidence that regular, moderate exercise can have anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects.

Maintain a positive attitude. Stay focused on the good things going on in your life. Reflect on your successes instead of things that are out of your control.

Write down your worries. Journaling what worries you may help pinpoint the real core of some problem so you can work on them more objectively.

Take time out for you. Engage in activities that make you feel energized and rejuvenated. That may be as simple as taking a quiet walk, practicing yoga or learning a new hobby. The important thing is to find things to do that give you pleasure instead of sitting around worrying. You can manage stress by averting your attention to new lifestyle choices. This will help you live a better life while coping with life’s pitfalls.

By Mark Underwood

Did you know a good dose of laughter can actually help your immune system and decrease stress? Have you ever wished you could let go and laugh more often at the silliness of life? It sounds easy but it’s not always possible, particularly if you’re facing ups and downs of life’s challenges. But if you can lighten up and be more playful, you’ll give yourself the freedom to have more fun. The good news is laughing has built-in health benefits to boot.

Here’s another reason to laugh. It’s contagious. Have you ever wondered why some people tend to attract others? Look more closely. It may be that they laugh easily and frequently even when they are surmounting numerous challenges connected with their health and aging.

Over 50 years of research back up the fact that positive social connections improve health outcomes and laughing is part of that equation. If you admire people who age gracefully, you may have noticed they smile easily and seem to radiate a joy for life even though they probably face an assortment of life’s ups and downs.

Laughter for better health

There’s no doubt about it laughter make you feel good, but research has shown that it also helps boost immunity, relax muscles, decrease pain, ease anxiety and relieve stress. Think of laughter as “internal jogging.” Laughter causes positive changes in brain chemistry by releasing endorphins, and that brings more oxygen into the body with the deeper inhalations caused by laughing. Keep in mind laughter is more than just a temporary mood booster. It is a powerful tool that helps us find new sources of meaning and hope. It gives us strength in difficult times, and connects us to others.

Giggle like a child

Boost your mental outlook by acting like a kid again. As you age, allow laughter, humor, games and playfulness to your life. Daily humor can help you feel more relaxed, creative and joyful. Studies have shown that the average preschool child in the U.S. laughs about 400 times a day. As adults we laugh far less frequently. According to studies at Ohio State University the average adult breaks out and laughs only about 15 times a day. If you can find a giggle in a situation, even for a few minutes, it will ease stress and help you refocus on positive things.

As you age, you may feel there are many things you can’t do as well as you used to. Maybe you can’t turn cartwheels like you used to, but no matter what your age, you can look for the humorous side of life. Laughter is a powerful tool. And it’s free to use anywhere, anytime.

Laugh everyday because…

Most of us don’t remember when we first smiled, but you were probably smiling when you were just a few weeks old. If you don’t laugh out loud very often, don’t despair, you can learn to laugh at any stage of life.

Look for something to laugh about everyday because you will automatically take yourself less seriously. Laugh everyday because it helps shift perspectives, recharge your batteries, and stay focused. Laughter helps you feel less anxious and sad. What’s more, having a good hearty laugh at least once a day can help trigger better relationships and stronger bonds with your friends and family members. Laughing produces a high speed exchange of positive enforcement between your brain and the people around you.

Keep a “laugh kit around”

These are some ways you can treat yourself to daily doses of good humor.

Hang out with positive “kids” of all ages—friends and family members from young to old, children, grandchildren, and great-children.

Surround yourself with reminders that there is a lighter side to life.

Put a funny cartoon somewhere visible in your home where you start your day.

Watch a funny movie or TV show.

Play with a pet.

Read the funnies.

Positive emotions can reduce health risks. So go ahead, create as many microseconds as possible of happiness-related chemistry. Laugh and you’ll improve your physical, mental and social health.

The 123rd Rose Parade® presented by Honda themed “Just Imagine…” will feature spirited marching bands from throughout the nation, majestic floral floats, and equestrian units.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will provide fast, frequent rail service to and from Pasadena, with four station stops near the parade route. Event-goers traveling by Metro will also avoid the costs of parking and hassle of traffic in Pasadena.

Rose Parade Metrolink

With this year’s Tournament festivities planned to begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, Metro will be ready with all rail lines – the Metro Red, Purple, Gold, Blue and Green Lines, and the Metro Orange Line – operating throughout the night of Jan 1-2 to enable event-goers to get an early place along the parade route.

In addition to the overnight service on Metro rail lines the night of Jan. 1-2, Metro will run additional trains and more frequent service on the Metro Gold Line to accommodate the large numbers of anticipated riders beginning at 5 a.m. and continuing through 9 p.m., with trains running as frequently as every seven to eight minutes to and from Pasadena.

All Metro Rail lines will operate New Year’s Eve/New Years Day, Dec. 31-Jan. 1 to give New Year’s revelers a safe, car-free travel choice. For New Year’s Eve/Day only, Metro will be providing free rides on all Metro bus and rail lines from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. on the morning of Jan. 1. After 2 a.m., regular fares go into effect. Those attending parade festivities after 2 a.m. New Year’s Day can purchase a $1.50 one-way fare if only riding the Metro Gold Line or a $5 Metro Day Pass if riding more than one line. The Day Pass allows for unlimited Metro System rides that day. Patrons can purchase their ticket at their initial boarding station.

Metrolink is also providing service that will connect event-goers along its San Bernardino line with additional transportation options into to downtown Los Angeles Union station, where they can then board the Gold Line to Pasadena.

The first Metrolink train will depart downtown Riverside at 5:30 a.m. and San Bernardino at 6:05 a.m., arriving in Los Angeles in time for passengers to attend the Rose Parade. On Jan. 2, Metrolink is offering a 2-for-1 special that allows two people to ride for the price of one. Visit metrolinktrains.com for more information on the promotion.

Parade goers can access any of four Pasadena train stations close to the Parade route on Colorado Boulevard. Memorial Park and Del Mar stations are about two blocks from the Parade route; the Lake and Allen stations are approximately four blocks from the Parade route.

Parking is available at several Metro Gold Line Stations, including Sierra Madre Villa, Del Mar, Fillmore, Mission, Heritage Square/Arroyo, Lincoln Heights/Cypress Park, Union Station, Indiana and Atlantic. Additional parking is available at stations servicing other countywide rail lines as well. Visit metro.net for a list of additional park & ride lots on the Metro System.

Football fans attending the 99th Rose Bowl Game® Presented by VIZIO shoul take the Metro Gold Line to Memorial Park Station. Upon arrival at the station, they should then walk three blocks west on Holly Street to the Parsons Corporation complex to catch the free Rose Bowl Game shuttle bus, with service starting at 10 a.m. The boarding location is on Pasadena Avenue, north of Union Street. Buses will leave continually through the game’s kick-off and first quarter.

Metro is also teaming up with the Tournament of Roses to provide easy access to view the Rose Parade floats after the parade. Take the Metro Gold Line to the Sierra Madre Villa Station in East Pasadena. Then board a shuttle bus from the Bus Plaza on the first level of the parking structure that provides direct service to Victory Park, where the floats will be displayed Jan. 2-3. Shuttles will depart from Sierra Madre Villa Station until approximately 3 p.m. each day. Return service to Sierra Madre Villa will continue to 5:30 p.m. Shuttle hours of operation are 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 2, and 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 3. On Jan. 3 from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m., only seniors and disabled will be allowed into the viewing area.

During the hours of operation the shuttle buses will pick up every five to ten minutes from the station. Regular fares will apply.

Metro does not allow eating, drinking or smoking on board Metro trains or buses. To ensure public safety, Metro prohibits flammable products, barbecues and oversized items such as ladders, umbrellas, tents, chairs and coolers from being brought on board the Metro Bus or Rail system. For additional information on Metro, visit metro.net.

(NAPSI)-Enough energy is saved by recycling one aluminum can to run a TV set for three hours or to light one 100-watt bulb for 20 hours. In addition, recycling a soda can saves 96 percent of the energy used to make a new can from ore.

Chemists and other scientists see that as progress-now American schoolchildren are asked to see it as poetry. A national contest challenges kindergarten through 12th-grade students to create an illustrated haiku about recycling or chemistry.

Recycle Reuse Reduce

A haiku is a three-line poem with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second and five in the third. Haikus typically have nature-related themes and do not rhyme. Here’s an example:

New materials

once old, now reworked for use

shining in the light.

The contest is sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as part of its Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED) celebration, which includes fun and educational activities nationwide. The ACS is a nonprofit organization chartered by Congress. It serves as the world’s largest scientific society and is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research.

First-place winners in each grade category will receive a $150 Amazon.com gift certificate. Second-place winners will receive a gift certificate for $75.

For more information about the society or the contest, including the contest deadline, visit www.chemistry.org/earthday2007.

Calling All College Students

The site also features information on an ACS video contest open to college undergraduate students. Entrants are encouraged to produce a video best illustrating the CCED theme “Recycling-Chemistry Can!” Videos will be judged on originality, creativity, composition and relevance to and incorporation of the theme.

Students are asked to be creative in their representation of the theme and can create music videos, educational videos, short skits, talk shows or any other video representation of recycling, reduction of waste or biodegradable materials and their associated chemistry. Visit www.chemistry.org/earthday2007 for more information and contest deadline.

About Earth Day

The first official Earth Day was April 22, 1970. The day was established to raise awareness of environmental issues and to remind people of the need to contribute to a sustainable planet. The ACS takes part in Earth Day under the banner “Chemists Celebrate Earth Day.”

Two new contests give students a chance to get creative with recycling.
