The 1906 Lodge On Coronado Island A Historic Gem

CORONADO ISLAND, CA — Built in 1906, the main building of the 1906 Lodge was a joint design by two renowned San Diego architects: Will Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill. The exterior rough stucco, major box dormers and hipped roofs are typical of Hebbard styles. The interior’s Mission-style fireplace with spiral leaded glass windows, along with “inglenook” or box bench seats on either side of the fireplace, are typical Gill elements.

The first owner was Florence C. Roper, who ran the property as a boarding house. Among the earliest boarders were students of the School of Aviation at North Island (site of today’s U.S. Navy air base). The Winchester family acquired the building in the 1920s, and ran it under the name Bay View Lodge.

In 1942, the Lodge was purchased by James J. Trant and renamed Trant Manor. It was used again as a boarding house, but after many years had slipped into disrepair. In 2009, new owners, recognizing the historic significance of the building, completed major restoration and renovation work, resulting in the beautiful 1906 Lodge that welcomes guests today. In summer 2015, the 1906 Lodge joined the Four Sisters Inns collection.

Part of San Diego County, Coronado Island is an oasis, separated from California’s second largest city by San Diego Bay. It’s a short trip from the mainland via the Coronado Bridge or the ferry, but truly a world apart.

Idyllic Coronado is a world-class destination that is still a small town at heart. A one-time Spanish rancho, the island is now known for some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. Protected by Point Loma to the east and the mainland to the west, the water surrounding Coronado is perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking and learning to ride the waves.

But it’s not all surfing and sand castles here. Visitors also enjoy the galleries, live theaters, boutiques, and restaurants of the historic downtown district, and the colorful, lush gardens that seem to thrive at every turn. Sailing and golf are popular pastimes, and the island offers 15 miles of dedicated bike and running paths.

Coronado is also home to the North Island Naval Air Station and Naval Amphibious Base, and is officially recognized as the “Birthplace of Naval Aviation” by the U.S. House Armed Services Committee. Each fall, the island celebrates Fleet Week to honor its proud naval heritage.

Four Sisters Inns is a prestigious collection of 17 smaller boutique inns and hotels located in California.

It all began in 1976 when the Post family opened their home, the spectacular Green Gables Inn on the shores of Monterey Bay, to the public on a limited basis. Taken by the warmth of innkeeping, they refined hospitality to an art, carefully selecting inns for the collection. Each inn has to be very special: in architecture, history, location, and privacy. From city to country, the inns have become a haven for their guests.

Over time, we’ve created standards that help define Four Sisters Inns. Today, with locations in the most desirable regions of California, each inn combines inviting décor with exceptional service and amenities. With architecture ranging from Victorian to French country to Craftsman to Cape Cod Beach, Four Sisters Inns continues to serve its guests with grace and professionalism.

We invite you to retreat, indulge, and relax in settings filled with comfort and charm.  (www.1906lodge.com)
