Grand Hyatt Berlin Undergoes Posh Remodel

The rooms of the hotel have been remodelled by New York architect Tony Chi

Berlin, Germany — 14 years after its opening Grand Hyatt Berlin has re-designed 126 of the 342 rooms.  The 5-star hotel on Potsdamer Platz commissioned New York architect Tony Chi for the modernisation and continues the successful cooperation with the architect.

“Tony Chi’s warm colours and the selected materials create a very special atmosphere that will positively impact our guests.  His designs stand for elegance and modernity combined with tradition and great attention to detail,” said Fred Hürst, director of the hotel and vice president of Hyatt International.  In recent years, Chi has also renewed the event floor and mesa restaurant of the hotel.

On entering the new room the eye-catching piano-black panelling next to the windows immediately stands out.  They form a contrast to the sun-drenched windows, which are equipped with window shades.  A large, round glass table with three legs and a wattled chair by Giorgetti invite guests to dinner and to work.  Each bedside table is made out of North American albino walnut wood and is unique, made by Satoru Amagasu in the United States.  Together with an oversized bedside lamp they give the room a cosy atmosphere.  The dark brown wool carpet also gives the room a sense of comfort.  Tony Chi mainly uses dark colours – aubergine, dark brown and beige – with organically shaped elements made out of wood.  A wall covering in earth tones completes the atmosphere in the room.

The lighting designers developed a concept that is easy to understand even for the inexperienced hotel guest.  The entire lighting system is controlled by a box.  The guest can choose between various moods of light and his own personal feel-good atmosphere.  The ash tree box is also able to control the blackout blinds that can darken the room completely.

Lovely details enhance the room with a personal touch.  For example a small clock on the bathroom mirror rotates freely and is highly adjustable so the time can be seen from any position.  Each room is equipped with flowers in bright colours that give the room a refreshing flavour and provide a nice contrast to the warm colours in the room.

Also there are QR codes at the entrance of the room to inform guests about the 5 star hotel’s art collection and the respective works in the individual rooms and suites.

By the end of August 2012 the first two floors will be modified.  The Grand Hyatt Berlin modernisation of all rooms will be completed in 2014, but rooms on the first two floors will be ready on 1 September 2012. Four new suites will also be added. Prices for new rooms will be 225 € per night for a single room and from 255 € for a double room, excluding breakfast and can be booked online at www.berlin.grand.hyatt.com or at +49 (30) 2553 1234.
