What joyful afternoon I recently had at the Castaways restaurant enjoy a lunch and spectacular show,” Thrill of Broadway” at the beautiful Castaways Restaurant tucked into the hills overlooking Beautiful Downtown Burbank.
The show, one of nine Showtime Cabaret Theatre 2007 productions is produced by Lita Joy Parker and her husband, Sky. This coming December will mark the 20th anniversary of the Parkers producing the Showtime Cabaret Theater in three locations throughout the Los Angeles Basin: The Pomona Mining Company, Sportsmen’s Lodge and, primarily, in the Castaway’s Starlight Room.
The Castaways provides Lita Joy with a large ballroom whose large windows give the guest a view a spectacular view of the San Fernando Valley. Circular table which seat eight are placed in front of a raised stage and offers a clear view of the performance from throughout the room. Behind a simple black curtain the performers change into a variety of costumes.
I attended as part of the Tarzana B’nai B’rith Lodge group. First a luncheon with an entree choice of salmon or prime rib was served with a mixed green salad, stuffed potato, a vegetable medley, beverage and a “surprise” dessert.
Five fantastic singers: Jim Sanderson, Ann Winkowski, Chris Feeney, Michaella Leigh and Dina Bennett opened the “Thrill of Broadway” with “Give My Regards to Broadway” from George M. Cohan’s Little Johnny Jones and closed with a medley from Phantom of the Opera. In between were selections from Showboat, My Fair Lady, Carousel, Evita, West Side Story and South Pacific to name just a few.
At the conclusion the audience rose to their feet for a standing ovation.
